Presidential Communications Assistant Secretary Ana Marie Banaag said that the election protest of Bongbong Marcos against Vice President Leni Robredo cannot affect the President’s victory. This is in reference to the May 2016 presidential race. The protest should not put into question the integrity of the entire process last year because he won by a big margin, she said.

Supreme Court’s Worry
Robredo’s lawyer Romulo Macalintal said that if Marcos questions the victory of his rival, he would also raise questions on the victory of Du30. Other candidates down to the local level are also affected. During the July 11 preliminary conference of the PET, several Supreme Court justices raise the same concern as Macalintal.
Voiding of Election Results
Marcos does not only doubt the integrity of the AES. He also accuses Robredo of some “traditional” modes of cheating. Pre-shading of ballots and vote-buying are a few of them. In line with this, Marcos’ camp asks the PET to void poll results in Lanao del Sur, Basilan and Maguindanao. A recount of votes in several areas is also a priority which is more agreeable to the SC.
Robredo’s electronic cheating through the automated election system provider Smartmatic allegedly happened when a hash code was added into the Commission on Elections transparency server. It somehow altered the results of the polls, said Marcos. The poll body admits that Smartmatic indeed introduced a new hash code, but only to correct a character in the names of candidates with “ñ” in them.
One Certificate of Canvass
Another lawyer of Robredo, Atty. Bernadette Sardillo also claimed that since there’s only one certificate of canvass used between the president and the vice president’s posts, the presidency must be declared vacant if Bongbong Marcos is indeed right on his protest. Although the president does not mind stepping down for Marcos, this is not just logical given the more than 6 million margin of Du30 from Mar Roxas.
