Bongbong Marcos Says No to DILG Post to Speed Up VP Decision?

Bongbong Marcos

welcome By: Elena Grace Flores

Despite the early concession of DILG Secretary Ismel Sueno, the President claifies that Bongbong Marcos is not interested to be the head of the interior department. This can be the fastest way for him to get an important post right after the one year ban for unsuccessful candidates in the 2016 polls. However, Marcos is so determined to facilitate all steps in the electoral protest procedures that he and his team has to concentrate on process based on previous statements. We still have to hear from Marcos himself that he is indeed saying no to the DILG post.

Electoral Protest Update

The Supreme Court or SC that sits as the Presidential Electoral Tribunal or PET proceeds to hear the election protest of former Senator and allegedly defeated May 2016 vice-presidential candidate Bongbong Marcos against Vice-President Leni Robredo. The PET rules that by virtue of Section 4, Article VII of the 1987 Constitution, in relation to Rule 13 of the 2010 PET Rules, “the Tribunal shall be the sole judge of all contests relating to the election, returns, and qualifications of the President or Vice-President of the Philippines. Robredo earlier argues that Marcos should elevate his case before Congress that sits as the National Board of Canvassers, as a pre-proclamation protest.

Robredo’s Mistake

The PET points out that Robredo mistakenly argues that questions on the authenticity, correctness or validity of the statement of votes (SOV) and certificates of canvass (COC) are excluded from the tribunal’s jurisdiction. This only proves to show that her lawyer, Atty. Romulo Macalintal is not that keen in his handling Robredo’s case that Bongbong Marcos filed.

Importance of the VP Post

Analysts can easily say that Bongbong Marcos wants to put all his resources to speed up the verdict of the electoral protest. Marcos just files a petition before the Supreme Court. It seeks to start the preliminary conference of his protest. To simplify and set the number of witnesses on top of other agreements are the objectives of the preliminary conference. The proceedings of the case can start once the court issues a preliminary conference order.

Supporters Trust the Wisdom of Bongbong Marcos

At a glance, one can regret that Bongbong Marcos lets go of an important position in the cabinet. Needless to say, his supporters trust his wisdom. Preparing for the electoral protest takes time and heavy efforts are due given the massive bulk of evidence and witnesses. It is in fact unselfish of him if ever he decllines to become DILG Secretary because remember that the only way for the President to be safe from the vengeance of the Liberal Party is for him to finally assume the Vice Presidency.
