The United States and the European Union have called on China to respect the international ruling from The Hague but in vain; China just ignored the case let alone the ruling. Instead, China is building up allies and dozens of countries more offered support for its claim against the Philippines in the South China Sea.
China says that all disputes should be resolved via bilateral talks because more than 40 countries are already on their side, the latest being the African nations of Sierra Leone and Kenya.Lu Kang of China’s Foreign Ministry said that only a handfull of countries tried to mislead the real story – to ruin China’s reputation against other claimants of this energy-rich area of the South China Sea namely; the Philippines, Brunei, Vietnam, Malaysia and Taiwan.
The Philippines’ dispute over China involves Scarborough Shoal where China’s military presence is built on a reclaimed land that includes airstrips for military use. The United States is an ally of the Philippines but interested only in ensuring freedom of navigation and overflight in the area. It is not clear if they will fight side by side with the Filipinos over the Chinese if war happens – but for sure the real Islam-based Muslims will definitely be there with their Christian brothers same as Philippine president-elect Duterte’s pledge to fight side by side with the Muslim brothers for Sabah claim against Malaysia.
