What does Congress Get in Detaining Gov. Imee Marcos?

welcome By: Elena Grace Flores

House Committee on Good Government Chairman Johnny Pimentel discloses that they the chamber is ready to accommodate Marcos’ detention in Congress. This is after she publicly announced a no-show at the hearing on July 25. This is the advice of her brother, Bongbong Marcos, and mother, Ilocos Norte congresswoman Imelda Marcos.

Luxury Mock

“She’ll be okay in the chamber. She might miss certain luxuries, considering her high lifestyle,” Pimentel said. This is a clear statement that the chair is biased. Pimentel’s committee investigates the provincial government’s alleged misappropriation of P66.45 million from Ilocos Norte’s share of excise tax collections. This sort of cash advance process is already a culture in the province since Rep. Farinas did that too in 2002. The strategy used by Congress is the same as what the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee did to former Vice President Jejomar Binay.

Gov. Marcos was finally subpoenaed to the fourth hearing on July 25. Although she would rather follow her brother Bongbong Marcos’ no-show advice than be humiliated. They may have to physically get military force to arrest her in Ilocos Norte. That would surely create a stir among the Marcos loyalists in the province.

Immediate Arrest

Pimentel swears: “Well if she does not show up, her arrest and detention are as sure as the sun rising tomorrow.” He said his panel may issue the warrant for the governor’s arrest on “the day of the hearing itself. This is more likely the same as the arrest of former Makati Mayor, Junjun Binay. The anti-Binay politicians managed to remove him prom office but the people immediately installs his sister, Abby Binay as the new Makati mayor.

Cross-Examination Trap

“The governor has already tried to explain in media interviews where the money went, how it was spent, and so on. Why can’t she just dutifully show up at our hearing, hand in the documents that her staff couldn’t produce, ” Pimentel added. These congressmen always forget the democratic nature of our laws. Such anomalies can be dealt with in court cases. Gov. Marcos has the right not to recognize the order from a “monkey” court as Binay previously puts it. Since these abusive Solons are determined to pull Gov. Marcos down, they better do the arrest in public. That way, all sympathy goes to Bongbong Marcos.
