The shortest inaugural speech of any Filipino President was that of President Rodrigo Duterte that lasted only 14 minutes, without a single swearing word. It was delivered in English but might be incomplete to some – though definitely, a classic act because it was well written and well delivered, following his personal conviction and style, without mentioning any controversial issues. No unnecessary verbiage as what the president ever wanted.
This might be the result of Archbishop of Davao and vice-president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines, Most Reverend Romulo Valles’, praying over him for God’s blessing and protection. They also prayed for the President “to gain wisdom from Heaven,” so that he could speak for those who cannot speak, and protect the rights of the poor.
God as majority witnessed really did keep him safe not just from physical harm but also from criticisms. Most Reverend Fernando Capalla, Archbishop Emeritus of Davao continued to pray for national healing so that the Filipinos could finally move forward in truth, justice and peace – under President Duterte’s leadership.
