Why attack Imee Marcos with corruption accusations if Majority Leader Rodolfo Fariñas is really retiring in 2019? Fariñas said that he is due for retirement from politics after his 3rd term as Ilocos Norte 1st District representative ends. Although he left it open should the administration wants him on board. Besides, he’s long been estranged from Bongbong Marcos’ picket since 2015.

Waiting Game

The Marcoses once hesitant to run in any position in Ilocos Norte. It’s taken as a waiting game of Philippine politics. Bongbong Marcos and his older sister, Imee held on to their certificates of candidacies that time. Their closest rival Rep. Rodolfo Fariñas did the same. In the end, it’s still a Marcos-Fariñas fight.

On and Off

Since 1998, the Fariñas and Marcos families have either been allies or rivals in Ilocos Norte. This is after the Marcoses returned to the province when their patriarch the late Ferdinand Marcos died in exile in 1989. Fariñas must have played the art of politics well to be able to still win for a public post.

Cut in 2015

In 2015, the Marcoses cut ties with Fariñas and dropped him from their “One Ilocos Norte” ticket of Bongbong Marcos and sister, Imee. It prompts Fariñas to run under the Liberal Party last year.He soon jumped ship to join Du30’s PDP-Laban party and again proves to be an effective strategy.

Far from Retirement

Fariñas recently initiates a probe into Ilocos Norte Governor Imee Marcos for the alleged misuse of PP66.45 million worth of tobacco funds. Marcos ignores the hearings after she questions the authority of the House of Representatives. It is just unlikely that such accusations are dealt with in Congress if not for politicking. Therefore, the next guess could be another Marcos-Fariñas fight in their locality, senatorial elections in 2019 or the big one in 2022?
