Senator gringo Honasan who is a notable man of good character issued a statement expressing his lamenntation that President Rodrigo Duterte must not subject the 5 generals suspected of protecting drug lords with “trial by” publicity – as this has unbearably negative effects on the lives of the general’s families that would worsen our society instead of freeing it from criminals.
Duterte should know the effects of “trial by publicity”. His idol, the great and former President Ferdinand E. Marcos was ruined because of such media propaganda. He also knew what former Jejomar Binay went trough while some senators were insisting on the highly televised probe on the alleged overpricing in Makati that COA denied. Why is he doing it to these 5 generals?
The divulging of by Duterte as the alleged drug protectors involving retired Deputy Director General Marcelo Garbo; retired Chief Supt. and now Daanbantayan town mayor Vicente Loot; Chief Supt. Joel Pagdilao; Chief Supt. Edgardo Tinio; and Chief Supt. Bernardo Diaz during the Air Force’s anniversary was immaterial. They should be treated innocent until proven guilty – as dictated by the constitutional mandate for the due process of law. Having good basis or not, the President’s lead does not give him the rights to ridicule these generals in public.
