Governor Imee Marcos withdraws her 100 M bribe accusation to LP members during the July 25 Congress hearing. This saved her from Rep. Rodolfo Farinas’ contempt citation. Like any other rumors, despite retracting it, doubts still loom. Did Marcos only do that to prevent herself from being detained in the House?

Apology or Strategy?
Faced with the prospect of being cited in contempt, Ilocos Norte Gov. Imee Marcos during the probe apologizes for accusing the Liberal Party of bribing lawmakers with P100 million. She gives the impression earlier that they just want to detain her in connection with the House inquiry into the alleged misuse of P66.45-million tobacco funds. This is for minicabs, buses, and mini-trucks.
Majority Leader Rudy Fariñas threatens to cite Marcos in contempt if she won’t reveal the source of the allegation. That “yellow forces” give out P100 million to certain members of Congress. Marcos initially refuses to reveal her source while she apologizes to lawmakers if the allegation offended them in some way.
Bad for LP
The allegation “puts a bad mark on all members of Congress. You have attacked the institution, through an unnamed source. That is not acceptable,” the lawmaker said. Farinas reiterated that he is used to negative publicity but he owes it to the other members of the Congress to clear them from alleged wrong accusations of the governor.
Just a Suspicion
The session was suspended for few moments. This allows Marcos to consult with her lawyers. Former First lady Imelda Marcos and Senator Juan Ponce Enrile are also there. When the hearing resumes, Marcos gives in, apologizes, and retracts her accusation. That was published in the Manila Times. She finally admits that it was only her suspicion. However, Marcos loyalists doubt that. They think that it’s Marcos’ way of preventing the Congress from detaining her.
