Former President Benigno Aquino III, also known as Noynoy Aquino said that he does not have all reports about the Marawi incidents and cannot judge yet if the imposition of martial law is right or wrong. He reiterates that during his time, he did not pursue it because it can only have little impact on the situation at that time.

[VIDEO]: Former President Benigno Aquino III recalled on Wednesday the time he considered declaring martial law in Sulu to address the terrorist threat in the island province in Mindanao but did not push through with it after his military commanders said it would have very minimal impact in the pursuit of the Abu Sayyaf.
Not the Solution
Aquino recalls the time he considered declaring martial law in Sulu. This is to address the terrorist threat in the island province in Mindanao. He did not push through with it after his military commanders suggested that it has a very minimal impact in the pursuit of the Abu Sayyaf rebels.
Martial Law at Tail End
The Abu Sayyaf executed Canadian nationals Robert Hall and John Ridsdel. They kidnapped them along with Norwegian Kjartan Sekkingstad and Maritess Flor, a Filipina. This is purely a terrorist attack and not rebellion just like what is happening in Marawi. The Maute group burned houses and takes over government establishments.
It was government policy not to give in to terrorist’s demands for ransom during the Aquino administration. Sekkingstad and Flor were released after his successor, President Du30 negotiated to release them as carried out by his allies. Aquino was always weak in dealing with forceful rebel groups in Mindanao. His father was also one of the founders of CPP-NPA so, it can also be considered as a biased approach.
Since Aquino vowed not to let any Marcos return to power, it is best for him to play safe. Du30 is a Marcos ally and he can be in trouble with their massive supporters for taking sides. Firstly, because of his late father’s involvement with the terrorists and secondly, because he was incompetent in dealing with the same problem during his time as president.
