People are Watching on How the Supreme Court Reacts to Robredo’s ‘Prove Fraud First before Pay’ Challenge

Supreme Court

welcome By: Elena Grace Flores

Eyes are on the Supreme Court on how they would react to Robredo’s “prove fraud first before pay” challenge as per her lawyer’s disclosure. Atty. Romulo Macalintal questions the SC’s wisdom on why they would have to pay when there’s no need to retrieve ballot boxes yet for their counter protest.

Macalintal’s Double Standard

Macalintal explains that Bongbong Marcos has to choose 3 precincts first for the manual recount to determine if there’s really fraud or not during the 2016 elections. In spite of this, he insists that Marcos should pay for all the precincts amounting to approximately P185 million and not just P81 million – that is the total of Marcos at P66 M and Robredo at 15 M. But on Robredo’s side, he said that he should not pay first until fraud is determined.

Marcos’ Timely Compliance

Despite the tough timing during the holidays, Marcos managed to pay the P36 million personally on time last on Monday. It will be followed by P30 million more which is due on July 14, for a total of P66 million. They also have to clarify why the computation is based on each precinct and not clustered precinct since the election was already automated. But to make sure that the case will not be dismissed, Marcos opted to pay with the help of some generous friends.

Macalintal’s Demand

Macalintal’s demand for Robredo is seen as disrespect to the Supreme Court. It remains to be seen how it would react to their interpretations of the law because Robredo’s camp is like saying that they do not know their job and need to be told. Will the SC dismiss her counter protest or lobby with her more until their trust rating is saturated?

Is the Public in for a Surprise?

The public can only guess what’s going to be the next move of the SC. It is speculated that most of the justices are Aquino’s appointees and they can be biased in favor of Robredo. However, since the late President Ferdinand E. Marcos hero’s burial went through, there is a chance that they will be on Marcos’ side this time – or it will be too obvious.
