PH Direction is Clear: P13 Billion EU Grants Refused Due to its Conditional Nature

welcome By: Elena Grace Flores

The EU delegation to the Philippines said that the Philippine government has informed them that the country no longer accepts new EU grants. This is in line with the president’s instruction to the new Department of Foreign Affairs Secretary, Alan Peter Cayetano. No conditional aids are acceptable. Internal interference by a foreign body must not be permitted, as implied by PDu30 in his public speeches.

[VIDEO]: The European Union confirms the Philippines will no longer accept new EU grants, pegged at around 250 million euros or P13.85 billion.

EU Confirmation

EU Ambassador to the Philippines Franz Jessen said the Philippines’ decision costs the country 250 million euros in EU grants. However, they are reported to support the Du30 administration’s drug war. This is contrary to the international call for the Philippine president to stop the alleged extra-judicial killings. The EU seems to slowly understand the real situation of the nation and how the controversial leader genuinely addresses the problem.

Interference to the Anti-drug Campaign

This President earlier slams the EU’s interfering in his bloody anti-drug campaign. He hated the fact that the organization threatens to stop the financial assistance to the Philippines.  “If you think it’s high time for you guys to withdraw your assistance, go ahead. We will not beg for it,” he said. This comes after foreign media portrayed him as a blood-thirsty president that prompted foreign international bodies to warn him of humanitarian violations without properly investigating the false news.

Jessen Clarifies Stand

The EU Parliament earlier warned the Philippines that it could lose trade incentives if the alleged human rights situation in the country does not improve. Jessen stressed that the EU was not at all “imposing” human rights conditions in the Philippines. It was the Philippines that signed 27 labor and human rights conventions under the United Nations system.

PH will Survive without Aid

Although the president’s move creates a stir among Filipinos, many regained their pride to be able to live independently without EU’s financial assistance. The country’s economic status did not improve in the many years that it receives these grants. Du30 felt that it’s about time to run the country without following instructions from overseas who may not know the implications of their restrictions. Foreign forces can only back off because the president remains popular. He is rigorously backed by the majority of the people in whatever decisions he makes.
