Pinol in Duterte Admin: Importing Rice Minimized while Rehabilitating Farm Sector

welcome By: Elena Grace Flores
We may not go back immediately during former President Ferdinand Marcos’ time that the Philippines was exporting rice to Thailand or other countries and even taught them rice farming techniques in tropical lands just yet – but at least, we are moving a step forward. In accordance to President Rodrigo Duterte’s aim to make the country self-sufficient within one to two years, Agriculture secretary Pinol said that we are boosting rice production by focusing on irrigation enhancements.”

The Philippines has now become one of the world’s biggest rice buyers, after the failure of past administration in developing the farming infrastructure that came last in its priorities – given that Filipinos are rice-eating people.
Import volume is now at a million tons of rice a year from Thailand and Vietnam regularly

The National Food Authority reported that the stock can still last for more than 3 months so, delaying the orders a bit because it’s projected to reach 2 million tons this year due to drought. Pinol added that P30 billion ($651 million) government budget is needed to immediately rehabilitate the farm sector that focuses on irrigation”.
