Protest Recount Results for Marcos’ Key Provinces are Expected in February 2018 Yet

welcome By: Elena Grace Flores

Marcos’ lead counsel, George Garcia hopes that the revision of votes on Bongbong Marcos’ protest against Leni Robredo would begin in October. This is if the recount can start middle of August. If this goes smoothly without delays, results can be known already by February – at least for Marcos’ pilot areas which are Negros Oriental, Camarines Sur, and Iloilo provinces.

Collection of Election Ballots

The recount of the 2016 vice presidential votes is expected to begin mid-August after the Supreme Court, sitting as the Presidential Electoral Tribunal, decided to push through Marcos’ electoral protest against Vice President Leni Robredo. “The collection of boxes will hopefully start by mid-August so we can end by the end of September,” Atty. George Erwin Garcia, Marcos’s chief legal counsel.

Priority Recount

Garcia said ballot boxes from Camarines Sur, Iloilo, and Negros Oriental will first be opened for the recount. “We were so sure that irregularities were present in these areas. Let’s open the ballot boxes so we can find out the truth,” Garcia said. Marcos questioned the authenticity of Robredo’s win after he lost to the Bicolana lawmaker by 263,400 votes. Robredo has repeatedly denied claims of cheating and maintained that she won the post fair and square.

Missing Votes in the Protest

The Marcos camp wants to prove that there were about 3.9 million missing votes for the position of vice president. Garcia said the contested ballots in the first three provinces alone “may be” enough to win against Robredo, he said. The Presidential Electoral Tribunal decided to proceed with the electoral protest on Tuesday after Marcos paid in full the amount required for the cost of retrieval of contested poll materials.

Confident for the Win

Robredo’s lawyer, Atty. Bernadette Sardillo said that she does not know where Marcos Camp’s confidence comes from. They have various motions and two months won’t be enough to facilitate the recount itself, she said. Since her colleague, Atty. Romulo’s Macalintal’s statements before are known to be biased, it is important just to be vigilant with the timing disclosed by Atty. George Garcia of the Marcos’ Camp. Mid-August is the start of the recount. Revision of votes is expected in October after the recount. Finally, by February 2018, recount results from the key provinces may decide for the continued recount or the dismissal of Marcos’ protest against Robredo that can give way to her counter-protest.
