The Mamasapano miss encounter sparked public outrage then and even now. It sets back the timeline of the peace agreement between the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front. The Aquino-appointed Ombudsman said that Aquino was fully aware that Purisima was suspended due to the alleged anomalous firearms deal. However, there are proofs to show that the former President still coordinated with him when “Oplan Exodus” was planned.

The Ombudsman Charged Aquino
The Ombudsman cites Aquino for criminal negligence. He participated in the flawed planning, she said. She refers to the police commando operation to capture Malaysian terrorist Zulkifli bin Hir alias Marwan. Marwan was killed during the assault in Mamasapano. However, his death cannot justify the number of SAF casualties between them and Muslim rebels.
Misinterpretation of Facts
Aquino will appeal the indictment. He received the order of the Ombudsman and is currently studying it with his lawyers. They are about to file a motion for reconsideration. “An initial reading shows that there may have been a misappreciation of some facts surrounding the incident, leading to some erroneous conclusions. He will seek to clarify the same through the motion for reconsideration,” his spokesperson said.
Usurpation of Authority
Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales ordered Aquino charged with usurpation of authority and violation of the anti-graft and corrupt practices act. She may be his appointee but he’s not in power anymore. It’s the people who have more say in a democratic country.
Aquino’s former national police chief retired Director General Alan Purisima and the former chief of the police Special Action Force, retired Director Getulio Napeñas were also charge. Napeñas earlier criticized Aquino for not having the balls to admit to his responsibilities. The former President blamed the unfortunate incident to Napeñas’ incompetence instead. Bongbong Marcos commented before that such incident can’t happen under his father’s presidency and that Aquino should take responsibility for his actions.
