Referendum for Marcos’ Burial at Heroes’ Cemetery Under Way

welcome By: Elena Grace Flores
The Filipinos are again divided when it comes to allowing the late President Ferdinand Marcos, Sr. to be buried in the Heroes’ Cemetery as a soldier who has served his country – not to mention being the president for two long decades – just because his good name was destroyed by media propaganda maneuvered by the political party of his then political rival who used to be his good friend, Ninoy Aquino.

In the United States where incoming Vice President Leni Robredo got majority of votes over rival Bongbong Marcos and son of late president from overseas workers and migrants who retained their Filipino citizenship through the dual policy or mere residency in America, this is not a good news. Some of them who have loved ones buried there as war veterans were so aghast with this development. Little do they know that if their deceased relatives are still alive, they would be so honored to be buried in the same place as the person they looked up to during their prime time.

Outgoing Vice President Jejomar Binay, a Human Rights lawyer for martial law victims and an aid of the late Cory Aquino to topple the older Marcos is now making up to his son, Bongbong Marcos. The referendum process was first raieed up by Senator Mirriam Defensor Santiago, the running mate of Senator Marcos during the May 9, 2016 election. Binay, Duterte and Santiago allied to unseat the Liberal party into the top position and they succeeded with Duterte bagging the post – but for the Vice Presidency, Marcos loses to Robredo but the VP race was marred with various cheating allegations accusing Liberal Party of orchestrating such dirty and dishonest poll. However, Duterte will be calling the shot for the referendum.
