Ferdinand Marcos

welcome By: Elena Grace Flores

The genesis of Filipino culture dictates that a man must be the strong kind and the woman is the beautiful being. This is how the late Ferdinand E. Marcos and former First Lady Imelda Marcos are known for during their reign. Their son, Bongbong Marcos agrees that although they struggle to give them a normal life due to circumstances of the stages in their lives, his parents act as their role model instead of being dictated.

[VIDEO]: In an interview with Mel Tiangco, former first lady Imelda Marcos shares how she and former president Ferdinand Marcos met, fell in love, and eventually got married – all in a span of 11 days!

Not Love at First Sight: He Loved Her all Along

Ever since Ferdinand E. Marcos is a young boy, he has this sketch of a woman that only Imelda Marcos’ features match. He is already 37 he meets the then 23-year old beautiful Imelda in a canteen of the congress session hall. She is with her cousin-in-law waiting for the cousin who is also in a session with then congressman Marcos. During the break, he is in the canteen to drink water and spotted her. He asks everyone to be introduced. Right then and there he asks her to marry him claiming at first that it is love at first sight – but then changes upon remembering the sketch.

Successful Leader

Peace and order determine a successful leader. Manila has the lowest crime rate in the world during his time as president. When the communist rebels try to destabilize the country, he put his name at risk by declaring martial law after the recommendation of his defense secretary then, Juan Ponce Enrile. Enrile testifies that Marcos decides on that to save the country. He even steps down during the EDSA revolution to avoid bloodshed, Enrile added.

Ferdinand Marcos is Not a Dictator

Imelda attests that the late Ferdinand Marcos is not a dictator. A dictator does not consult anybody. He has plebiscites, referendum, and various sessions before approving an important issue. He is also not into using power to implement capital punishments to convicted prisoners but compassionate to those who can still be reformed. This explains why he allows Ninoy Aquino to seek treatment in the US and long exile instead of putting him on death throw since his sedition case is punishable by death already. Ninoy stays in prison for 7 years before his heart attack and departure to the US.

Heavenly Romantic Life

The Marcos couple never fight. Imelda explains that the children follow you not by what you said but by what you do. Imelda is conscious on bringing up the children in a normal way, said the youngest and only son Bongbong Marcos. Malakas and Maganda or the Strong and the Beautiful are their labels in Filipino culture. That should be how people must behave in their relationships. Strong not by power but in compassion and responsibility while beautiful in caring and nurturing the children and people in general.
